Worth the Trip: Becoming a Certified North Carolina Destination Business
We did this for our superfriends.
When we set out to become a Certified North Carolina Destination Business, we kept coming back to one question: if someone makes the drive to see us, what will make them glad they came?
A watch might bring you through the door. So might a Pokémon card, a favorite character, or a child who spotted something in the window. We want the welcome, the discoveries, and the conversations to make you want to come back.
What does “Destination Business” mean?
The Certified North Carolina Destination Business program comes through the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Main Street & Rural Planning Center, with destination-development training led by Jon Schallert and The Schallert Group. It helps independent businesses identify what makes them distinctive and turn that into a reason for people to visit their downtown.
For us, that meant taking a careful look at the whole experience at SuperheroWatches.com: what you discover, how you find your way around, how we help, and what you remember when you leave.
Why we chose to do the work
Our superfriends include longtime watch collectors, trading-card fans, parents trying to understand a new hobby, grandparents looking for a gift, and people who step inside simply because the place looks interesting. Each deserves a warm welcome. Nobody should need to pass a fandom quiz to feel comfortable here.
We also know a visit takes something from you: time, a drive, perhaps a family afternoon. We wanted to be more thoughtful about what we give back. Pursuing certification gave us a framework for looking at our store through your eyes.
From an idea to a completed checklist
Our owner certification checklist was submitted on September 30, 2026. The seven-part submission asked us to show how we had applied destination-business principles to our own shop. We documented our positioning, product spotlighting, customer services, store displays and layout, intended customers, brand image, and media outreach.
Here is what that work meant in practice.
Putting our own story into words
We had to explain what makes a trip here different. Our submission described our collection of licensed superhero and character watches, our history of collaborating on watch designs, and the mural work by artist Chance White. Those details gave us something specific to talk about: the people and creative work behind what you see.
Looking closely at the space
We documented our “dominant wall,” “dominant aisle,” and “departure point”—the program’s terms for important parts of the shopping experience. Our Wall of Watches is a natural focal point. The work also asked us to think about how someone moves through the shop and what impression stays with them as they leave.
That is a useful exercise when you know your own store almost too well. A first-time visitor sees it differently. We want the displays to invite discovery, with room to pause and enjoy what is there.
Making service part of the destination
The checklist also asked us to consider the services and personal touches that make a visit special. For us, that starts with listening. Who is your favorite superhero? Are you collecting for yourself or choosing something for someone you love? Do you want help, or a little time to look around?
Our family corner, conversations about cards, and the offer of bottled water or a Capri Sun after a drive are small expressions of the same idea: you are our guest.
Knowing who we are inviting
We identified the superfriends we hope to reach, from adult collectors to families sharing their favorite characters across generations. We also worked on how our photographs, brand image, and outreach tell that story before someone arrives.
The submission brought those pieces together in writing and photographs. It made us explain our intentions and show the work behind them.
What the recognition means to us
We are proud that SuperheroWatches.com is a Certified North Carolina Destination Business. The recognition gives us a meaningful milestone. The responsibility is to keep earning your visit, one person at a time.
We want you to find something you love here. We also hope you wander downtown, meet our neighbors, get something good to eat, and discover a little more of Elkin. Our shop belongs to a community, and that community is part of the trip.
Most of all, we want you to feel welcome—whether you leave with a watch, a pack of cards, or simply a good memory.
Superfriends, this one is for you. Thank you for giving us a reason to keep making this place better.
